Community Resilience and Social Dynamics in Somalia: Understanding Local Capacities and Behavioral Responses
An ISDR research brief exploring the social dynamics, community relationships and local capacities that influence how communities respond to social, economic and environmental challenges in Somalia.

Abstract

Community resilience is shaped not only by access to resources and services, but also by relationships, social networks, local institutions, collective action and community perceptions. In Somalia, communities continue to face complex and interconnected challenges, including climate-related shocks, displacement, economic pressures and changing social conditions.
This publication examines key dimensions of community resilience and social dynamics, with particular attention to how communities organize themselves, share information, respond to challenges and mobilize local resources. It considers the role of community institutions, social networks, participation and locally developed coping mechanisms in strengthening resilience.
The publication highlights areas where further evidence and locally grounded research can contribute to more responsive development, humanitarian and resilience programming.
