Community Health, Nutrition and Public Policy Assessment
Generating evidence on community health, nutrition, access to essential services and policy priorities to support more responsive health programming and evidence-informed public policy in Somalia.
Research Overview

About the Research

Understanding the context, questions and approach behind this research.

Background

Health and nutrition outcomes are influenced by a range of social, economic, environmental and policy factors. Communities may experience differences in access to health services, nutrition support, health information and other essential services depending on their location, circumstances and available resources.

Understanding these factors is important for developing policies and programmes that respond to community needs and address barriers to equitable access to essential health and nutrition services.

Research Purpose

This assessment aims to generate evidence on community health and nutrition conditions, access to essential services, community experiences and policy priorities.

The research will seek to identify key challenges and opportunities that can contribute to improved health programming and evidence-informed policy development.

Objectives

The study aims to:

  • Examine community experiences and perceptions regarding health and nutrition.
  • Assess factors influencing access to essential health services.
  • Explore barriers to accessing health and nutrition information and support.
  • Examine community awareness of key health and nutrition issues.
  • Identify differences in experiences among relevant population groups.
  • Explore community perspectives on health priorities and service needs.
  • Identify policy and programming considerations emerging from the evidence.

Key Issues / Research Questions

The research will explore questions including:

  • What are the main health and nutrition concerns identified by communities?
  • What factors influence access to essential health services?
  • What barriers prevent some community members from accessing available services?
  • How do communities obtain health and nutrition information?
  • How do communities perceive the quality and relevance of available services?
  • What health and nutrition priorities do communities identify?
  • Are there differences in access and experiences among women, children, youth and other relevant population groups?
  • What policy and programme measures could help address identified gaps?

Methodology

The assessment will use a mixed-methods research approach appropriate to the research questions and study context.

Potential methods may include:

  • Review of relevant health, nutrition and policy information
  • Household or community surveys
  • Key informant interviews
  • Focus group discussions
  • Community consultations
  • Interviews with relevant health and development stakeholders
  • Analysis of available secondary data

The research will follow appropriate ethical principles, including informed participation, confidentiality, privacy and respect for participants.

The final sampling strategy and research instruments will be determined according to the geographical scope, target population and specific research objectives.

Findings

The study has not yet commenced. Findings are not available at this stage.

Findings will be documented following completion of the research, analysis and validation processes.

Outcomes / Impact

The assessment is expected to contribute evidence that can support:

  • Better understanding of community health and nutrition priorities
  • More responsive health and nutrition programming
  • Improved understanding of barriers to service access
  • Evidence-informed policy development
  • Stronger consideration of community perspectives in health planning
  • Identification of areas requiring further research or intervention

ISDR Research Perspective

The assessment reflects ISDR's commitment to generating credible, impartial and evidence-based knowledge that can contribute to improved policy, stronger institutions and better outcomes for communities.
