Climate Vulnerability and Community Adaptation Study
About the Research
Understanding the context, questions and approach behind this research.
Background
Som communities in Somalia are exposed to a range of climate and environmental pressures that can affect livelihoods, natural resources, food security, water availability and community well-being. These pressures can interact with existing social and economic vulnerabilities, increasing the challenges faced by households and communities.
Understanding how communities experience climate-related risks and how they respond to changing environmental conditions is important for strengthening resilience and supporting more sustainable approaches to development and environmental management.
Research Purpose
This study aims to examine climate-related vulnerabilities, environmental pressures and community adaptation strategies in selected contexts in Somalia.
The research will generate locally grounded evidence on how communities perceive and respond to climate and environmental challenges and identify opportunities for strengthening resilience and environmental safeguarding.
Objectives
The study aims to:
- Examine major climate-related risks and environmental pressures affecting communities.
- Understand how climate and environmental changes influence livelihoods and community well-being.
- Document community perceptions of climate-related risks.
- Explore locally developed adaptation and coping strategies.
- Identify factors that strengthen or limit community resilience.
- Examine community perspectives on environmental safeguarding and natural resource management.
- Identify opportunities for strengthening climate adaptation and resilience.
Key Issues / Research Questions
The research will explore questions including:
- What climate and environmental pressures are most significant for communities?
- How are these pressures affecting livelihoods and access to natural resources?
- How do communities perceive changes in their environment and climate?
- What adaptation and coping strategies are currently being used?
- Which groups or livelihoods may be particularly vulnerable to climate-related pressures?
- What factors enable or constrain community adaptation?
- How do communities participate in environmental protection and natural resource management?
- What approaches could strengthen climate resilience and environmental safeguarding?
Methodology
The study will use a mixed-methods approach appropriate to the research context and objectives.
Potential methods may include:
- Review of relevant climate and environmental information
- Community consultations
- Key informant interviews
- Focus group discussions
- Household or community surveys where appropriate
- Stakeholder interviews
- Review of relevant secondary data and research
The research will seek to incorporate local knowledge and community perspectives alongside available scientific and secondary evidence.
Research activities will follow appropriate ethical principles, including informed participation, confidentiality and respect for community knowledge and experiences.
The specific study locations, sampling strategy and research instruments will be determined according to the final research design.
Findings
The study is ongoing. Findings are not yet available.
Findings will be documented following completion of data collection, analysis and validation.
Outcomes / Impact
The study is expected to contribute evidence that can support:
- Improved understanding of community climate vulnerabilities
- More context-sensitive adaptation programming
- Stronger community-based resilience approaches
- Better environmental safeguarding
- Evidence-informed climate and environmental policies
- Sustainable natural resource management
- Identification of areas requiring further research or intervention
ISDR Research Perspective
The study reflects ISDR's commitment to evidence-based research that contributes to climate resilience, environmental stewardship and sustainable development while recognizing the importance of locally grounded knowledge and community participation.
